My grandfather, Frank Chandler Goss, attended Carleton from 1891 to 1895. He was a probate court judge in Wabasha County [Minnesota] until he died in 1949. In 1956 I was admitted to the Air Force Academy and to Dartmouth. A color vision deficit cleared the Air Force and distance from Minnesota cleared Dartmouth. I enrolled at Carleton that fall.
But I was not to stay. Failing physics and French my freshman year put me in line for a transfer to the University of Minnesota, and I graduated from there in spring 1961.
I remain grateful for the careful guidance from Jane Andrews [a member of the Class of ’41 who worked in Carleton’s student placement office from
1947 to 1973, including a stint as director of financial aid]. In retrospect, I have observed that our failures move us along in ways that success does not, and I have quietly thanked Carleton many times.
