To illustrate our cover story about mapping police use-of-force incidents in one of Minneapolis’s most diverse neighborhoods, artist Mike McQuade used a variety of sources, from public domain images from city plat books and police manuals to documentary photography by Carleton Digital Content Producer Zach Spindler-Krage.
The result offers a bold visual representation of the collaboration between Carleton statistics students and Confluence: An East Lake Studio for Community Design, one that, as writer Kate Nelson puts it, “layers empirical evidence (city-provided statistical data) onto the anecdotal (the lived experiences of area residents).”
