Course: “Human Centered Computing,” one of dozens of Argument and Inquiry seminars—classes taken by freshmen during their first term at Carleton that are designed to introduce them to critical thinking
Instructor: Amy Csizmar Dalal, associate professor of computer science
Purpose: “I’d like students to think about the technology they’re using currently, and what may develop in the future. Not just how they interact with technology, but how technology shapes them. How can we make technology work better for people? When we consider technology in a more holistic way, we become better consumers, developers, and evaluators of technology.”
Issues to consider: “Our attention gets divided by all the information that’s at our fingertips. What are the implications of that? What is the significance of how Arab Spring helped make Twitter a centerpiece in organizing protests and keeping people informed? What does that say about how people and technology shape and reshape each other?”
