Nothing was as it should be this past spring. But knowing how much students and their families look forward to Commencement, we committed to holding a virtual celebration for the Class of 2020 in June (and we’ll follow that up with an in-person ceremony in 2021). In addition to the conferring of degrees, the celebration included remarks from President Steve Poskanzer, Dean Carolyn Livingston, and Calla Slayton ’20, as well as video congratulations from alumni and faculty and staff members.

Parents sent in their good wishes, too. Dirk VanDerwerker ’78 offered these sentiments to his daughter Margriet VanDerwerker ’20:

“Mom and I are proud of you, Griet, and we admire all the heart and effort you put into your four years as a student. The appearance and disruption of COVID-19 is an early lesson that uncertainties abound. Stay flexible, be kind, and use your wits. Life rewards those who . . . show up. Love, Mom and Dad.”
