Field Guide to Senior Week

Carleton has hosted special events for seniors during the week leading up to graduation for most of its history, even if the lineup was a bit different 100 years ago. In 1910 the highlights of Senior Week were a breakfast picnic along the Cannon River and the “snappiest baseball game of the season,” according to the student newspaper. Seniors also enjoyed extra privileges for the week: they could stay out until 8:30 p.m. with no questions asked and keep their lights on after 10:00 p.m.

Senior Week 2017 featured the time-honored tradition of a banquet followed by prom and also included karaoke in downtown Northfield; bowling, laser tag, and arcade games in Lakeville, Minnesota; and a field day at Carleton’s Rec Center.

In the midst of the festivities, seniors had to pack up their belongings, say good-bye to best friends and favorite teachers, and get ready to begin the next chapter of their lives. A bittersweet week, to be sure.
