Students founded the Islam Inquiry Group in 2011 to provide an outlet for religious discussion. Today the often-lively discussion group has about 10 regular participants who explore topics such as prayer, social justice, and Islamic fashion’s connections to rap music.
“There aren’t many spaces on campus where I can truly express my religious identity, even though I portray it outwardly,” says Hibo Abdi ’20 (Minneapolis), currently vice president of the Muslim Student Association (MSA). “This is a space where we can all come together and talk about our faith. It has always been a place that I’ve felt like I could call home.”
Students of any faith are welcome to attend and ask questions. “I’m always pleasantly moved by the students’ openness,” says associate chaplain Ailya Vajid, who leads the discussion group with MSA members. “The students who come want to learn.”
Beyond discussion, the group aims to connect the greater campus community to Islamic culture. Group members hosted their first Ramadan eve dinner—a tradition that they hope to continue.
“It’s nice to spend time with a group of people who share my religion and values,” says Mehdi Shahid ’22 (Arusha, Tanzania). “Also, it’s a great place to enjoy halal food!”
