The Carleton Board of Trustees met in Northfield for its Spring Term meeting on May 7-9, 2026. The following is a brief summary of major topics discussed and actions taken during their meeting:
1. The Board elected 3 second-term trustees, 5 new regular trustees, one alumni trustee, and one young alumni trustee, each for a four-year term starting on July 1, 2026. The Board also approved two former trustees to the role of Emeriti Trustees.
2. The Board approved spring term B.A. degrees, pending successful completion of their remaining requirements.
3. The Board approved the following faculty promotions:
Promotion to Endowed Chair: Shaohua Guo (Burton and Lily Levin Professor of Chinese), Daniela Kohen (Laurence McKinley Gould Professor of the Natural Sciences and Chemistry), William North (James Woodward Strong Professor of History and the Liberal Arts), and George Vrtis (Lloyd McBride Professor of History and Environmental Studies
From Professor to Professor Emeriti: Barbara Allen (Political Science and International Relations), Deborah Appleman (Educational Studies), Pamela Feldman-Savelsberg (Sociology and Anthropology), Fernal Jaramillo (Biology), Cherif Keita (French and Francophone Studies), and Michael Kowalewski (English)
Promotion to Associate Professor: Candace Moore (Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies, Cinema and Media Studies)
4. The Board authorized the renaming of the townhome known as Rice House to Aslanian House, in honor of Jack Aslanian ’67, and pursuant to an estate gift.
5. The Board approved updates to Carleton’s Policy Against Sexual Misconduct.
6. The Board received an update on enrollment and the Class of 2030 from Vice President Art Rodriguez, and a campaign update from Vice President Daren Batke.
7. The Board had the opportunity to review and discuss the Strategic Direction, Carleton 2033, and the impacts that national events have had on the goals outlined in Carleton 2033.
8. The Board heard reports from the Alumni Annual Fund Chair, the Alumni Council President, the Parents Advisory Council Co-Chairs, and the Carleton Student Association President.
9. Small groups of students joined trustees for a special dinners and conversation.
10. The Board joined the English Department and Library staff for a special look at the Bob and Carolyn Nelson Collection of rare and first edition books in Special Collections. Students from Professor Pierre Hecker’s Adventures in Special Collections class presented their findings after studying the collection.
