Blake Held has been promoted to director of security and emergency management, succeeding John Bermel, who will leave Carleton later this month after serving in the role since 2018. Concurrent to this change, Security Services will move under the umbrella of Campus Services, which Jesse Cashman will lead in his newly promoted role as associate vice president of campus services.
Blake has served as assistant/associate director of security services and emergency management for the last six years and has been closely involved with all operations of the department during that time. Prior to joining Carleton, Blake served as emergency management coordinator at St. Cloud State University. Blake has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota-Crookston and a master’s from St. Cloud State University, both in criminal justice.
Jesse has been with Carleton since 2018, serving as director of auxiliary services, where he oversees the bookstore, campus scheduling and special events, dining, fleet vehicles, mail services, the OneCard program, and print services. Adding security to his portfolio is a natural change, as prior to his time at Carleton, Jesse served as assistant vice president for safety and risk management at St. Cloud State University, director of safety and security at North Hennepin Community College, and director of public safety and risk management at Augsburg College. He also is active as a consultant on campus safety matters.
In his time at Carleton, John has helped professionalize the work of the Security Services department, build the College’s emergency management capacity, nurture a strong and collaborative culture, and lead Carleton through the pandemic. John, and his approach to the work, will be missed. Please join us for a reception to celebrate John and his many contributions to Carleton on Friday, Aug. 25, 2-3:30 p.m. in Weitz 236.
