Honoring Jane Shockley

20 April 2021

Our dear friend, teacher, and colleague Jane Shockley is retiring from her position as senior lecturer in the Department of Theater + Dance at the end of spring term 2021.

Jane has been teaching at Carleton since 1994, where she has warmly and skillfully, guided, encouraged and trained dance students, and helped build Carleton’s dance program. Jane is revered by so many:  students, alum, fellow faculty and the professional dance community, whom she has touched through her wise, authentic, and profound teaching and directing. Throughout the years, Jane has directed and created stunning work for Carleton’s Semaphore Repertory Dance Company, which she helped found, and which provides dancers and dance majors a platform for entering the professional field. Jane’s signature classes include Contemporary Dance Forms, Movement for the Performer, Moving Anatomy, Contact Improvisation and co-directing the Semaphore dance company with a genius for rehearsal direction. She has helped make the dance program at Carleton unique and contemporary in the greater liberal arts domain. Her thoughtful, humane leadership and deep commitment to the body and the art form has created a thriving community of sentient, intelligent dancers and movers.

To celebrate Jane’s invaluable contributions to the Carleton community, we invite you to submit thoughts, memories, and/or wishes either via text or video, below. Photos accepted as well!
