Spring Term Theater Production: Intimate Apparel
Esther, a Black seamstress who travelled North in the Great Migration, sews intimate apparel and dreams of owning her own beauty parlor. At thirty-five, she is grimly facing spinsterhood when she begins receiving letters from a gentleman in Panama. As she serves her clients (a high-society socialite and a down-on-her-luck prostitute) and secretly yearns for the Orthodox Jewish fabric vendor who shares her passion for fabric, Esther starts a correspondence that will change her life. Inspired by the life of her great grandmother, Lynn Nottage’s Intimate Apparel gives us a glimpse into the life of a working-class Black woman in 1905 New York City.
