Problems can occur when connecting to the remote host, logging into the remote host, and during an active session.
If you cannot connect to the remote host, use Ping to discover any network problems.

If your Telnet session produces unexpected characters in the activity window, choose the Reset Terminal option from the Host menu. This resets your session to the default terminal settings.
Incorrect terminal type negotiation can cause session problems. To correct this condition, enter an identification string into the Identification String field in either the VT tab, TN3270 tab, or TN5250 tab. Entering an identification string forces Telnet to emulate the terminal specified by the identification string.
