Understanding Pronto Mail

Pronto Mail is a Windows client for TCP/IP-based electronic mail servers. Pronto Mail helps you manage your electronic correspondence more easily and efficiently from your workstation. Pronto Mail works with an SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) mail server on a TCP/IP network or through a serial TCP/IP connection (such as SLIP or PPP). Use Pronto Mail connected to your network to read, create, and send mail, or locally to read and create mail without depending on network availability.

Pronto Mail requires an additional computer running an SMTP server program (not supplied with Cisco TCP/IP Suite for Windows) so you can send and receive mail on your workstation. Typically this computer uses the VMS operating system and Cisco MultiNet for OpenVMS, or it can be a UNIX system or another type of system capable of running SMTP.

Using Pronto Mail requires an SMTP server.
