Cisco TCP/IP Suite Applications

Cisco TCP/IP Suite for Windows provides the following applications:

Configuration Utility

The Configuration Utility lets you:

The Configuration Utility also:

Dialer Application

The Dialer application lets you establish either a SLIP (Serial Line IP) or PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) connection to another host. Dialer can use either a modem and phone lines, or a direct serial connection.

Dialer also lets you:

FTP Client

The FTP Client application uses Internet-standard FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to transfer files between your local workstation and a remote host configured as an FTP server. FTP was created so that users could transfer files between a variety of system types without being concerned about the different methods systems use to store data.

The FTP Client application adds a graphical interface to FTP so that you can copy files by using drag-and-drop, change directories by clicking the mouse, and log into a host by clicking a button.

The FTP Client application includes a message log so that you can view the interactions between your workstation and the FTP server as they occur. If necessary, you can use the contents of this log to troubleshoot any problems that may arise when using FTP.

FTP Server

The FTP Server application uses FTP to let authorized users access files on your workstation.

To let others access files, you first provide the FTP Server application with authorized user names and passwords. You also assign a default directory for each user and privileges that let the user list, read, create, or delete files in that directory. The FTP Server application stores this information in a database and uses it to authenticate users who request FTP access to your workstation.

The FTP Server application includes a message log so that you can view communications between your workstation and the FTP client. If necessary, you can review the contents of this log to troubleshoot any problems that may arise when using the FTP server.

Kerberos

Kerberos is an authentication method, used in conjunction with Telnet, that lets a user access a remote system without sending plaintext passwords over the network. This form of authentication, which uses encryption, prevents intruders from capturing passwords by watching network traffic.

The Kerberos application lets you identify Kerberos ticket servers and obtain Kerberos tickets. It also lets you view valid and expired tickets, add special realm mappings, and change your password.

Monitor Application

The Monitor application presents detailed information about TCP/IP communications on the workstation. When you choose one of Monitor's options, Monitor gathers the requested information and displays it in a table for your review.

Monitor offers information on:

MultiNet Tools

The MultiNet Tools application is a collection of five well- known network applications that let you obtain information about users and hosts on the network, test network connections, and troubleshoot network problems. The five applications are:

You can start MultiNet Tools from other applications so that you can test network connections immediately or view network information if you have difficulties communicating with remote hosts.

NFS and Print Assistant

The NFS and Print Assistant application lets you access files on other systems as if they were on your workstation. NFS and Print Assistant uses the NFS (Network File System) protocol to make these files available.

The NFS and Print Assistant is a client operation that works with an NFS server to provide file access. The NFS server can be a system running NFS from any type of operating system.

Once the NFS server is running, you can map any of the available NFS mount points to a local drive by using NFS and Print Assistant. Once mapped, the mounted files appear to reside on your workstation. This means you can copy, move, create, view, and delete files just as you normally would with Windows or from a DOS prompt started from Windows.

If desired, you can configure NFS and Print Assistant so that it maps all drives automatically whenever you start Windows.

Ping Application

The Ping application tests TCP/IP connections to other hosts on the network so you can verify that the workstation is communicating effectively on the network and that no information is being lost.

Ping also provides a Host Lookup feature that lets you find a host's IP address when you only have the host name or a host's name when you only have the IP address. The Host Lookup feature also provides information on the host's CPU type and operating system type.

SNMP Agent

The SNMP (Simple Networking Management Protocol) Agent allows your network configuration to be read and modified by remote SNMP managers that are a part of your SNMP community. The SNMP Agent sends all standard SNMP traps (notifications of errors and other significant events) in the SNMPv1 definition.

Telnet

The Telnet application lets you use the Telnet or Rlogin protocol to connect to any host on the network that supports Telnet or Rlogin. In this pseudo-terminal mode, you can perform all operations as if you were using a terminal physically connected to the remote host.

The Telnet application provides DEC and IBM terminal emulations which allow your workstation to act as if it were a TN3270, TN5250, VT400, VT100 or VT52 terminal.

To help you customize your keyboard, the Telnet application also supports keyboard mapping. With keyboard mapping, you use a simple drag-and-drop utility to map the key functions you want your workstation keyboard to use. The keyboard mapping utility lets you save keyboard mappings in a file for future use, and lets you create custom macros for individual keys. Telnet also allows you to print the contents of a user-defined scroll back buffer.

VerInfo

The Version Information (VerInfo) application lets you view version information, change your license key, or view the README file supplied with the release. Use VerInfo to convert an evaluation copy of your software to a licensed copy.
