The home page (in this context) is the initial document that Enhanced Mosaic opens upon start-up and when the Home command is invoked. This can be either a local file, a URL on your local network, or it can be a URL on the Internet. The default home page is www.cisco.com.

To change the default home page:

Configuring Helpers

By default, Enhanced Mosaic supports HTML and text documents, JPEG and GIF images, and AU and AIFF sound files. You can add support for other types of files by configuring a helper application. Any program that accepts command-line instructions can be used as a helper application. To configure a helper for Enhanced Mosaic:

  1. Start Enhanced Mosaic and choose Helpers from the Edit menu.

    The Helpers dialog box appears.

  2. If the file type you want to support is listed, select it and click the Edit button. Otherwise, click the Add button to define a new file type.

The Configure File Type dialog box appears.

  3. Enter a name for the file type in the Description field.
  4. If no MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) description is listed, enter the MIME type in the MIME Type field.
  5. Enter each file name extension associated with the file type in the Suffixes field. Separate each extension by a space.
  6. Select the Binary or Text radio button to indicate how the file type is encoded.
  7. Enter the path and file name of the helper application in the Helper Application field. You can use the Browse button to select a file.
  8. If the helper application is compatible with the Mosaic Software Development Interface, enter the DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) service name of the application in the Service Name field. If you do not specify a service name, Enhanced Mosaic invokes the command line in the Helper Application field to launch the helper application.
  9. Click the OK button or press Enter.

Using Proxy Servers

Many organizations use a firewall (usually on a router or computer) to protect their internal network from external access. A proxy server is a program, typically running on a firewall machine, that can be configured to block external access, while permitting users behind a firewall to access Internet resources. If you are not familiar with firewalls or proxy servers, or do not know if your organization uses a firewall or proxy server, see your system administrator for more information.

Enhanced Mosaic lets you specify a different proxy server for HTTP, gopher, and FTP protocols.

Specifying Proxy Servers

To specify proxy servers:

  1. Start Enhanced Mosaic and choose Preferences from the Edit menu.

    The Preferences dialog box appears.

  2. Choose Proxies from the drop-down list at the bottom of the dialog box.

    The Proxies panel appears.

  3. To specify a proxy server for a specific protocol, enter the domain name or IP address of the proxy server in the Proxy field for that protocol. Enter the port number of the proxy server in the field that follows the colon for that protocol.
  4. Click OK.

The Preferences dialog box closes, returning you to the document window.

Bypassing Proxy Servers

To bypass proxy servers in Enhanced Mosaic:

  1. Start Enhanced Mosaic and choose Preferences from the Edit menu.

    The Preferences dialog box appears.

  2. Choose Proxies from the drop-down list at the bottom of the dialog box.

    The Proxies panel appears.

  3. In the Bypass Proxy On field, enter the IP addresses, domain names, and ports that should be accessed directly without using a proxy server. Separate entries with commas. For example:

  4. Click OK.

The Preferences dialog box closes, returning you to the document window.

Selecting Security Authentication

Many sites on the World Wide Web try to authenticate you before granting access. This is a simple way of identifying you and protecting their resources. To select a type of authentication for Enhanced Mosaic:

  1. Choose Security from the Edit menu.
  2. Choose a type of authentication from the drop-down list.

    The About Authentication dialog appears.

  3. Click the OK button to select the default mode or the Configure... button to configure the authentication settings.

For more information about the different security options, see the Enhanced Mosaic online help.

Improving Performance

Enhanced Mosaic includes several features to increase performance. You can:

Loading Documents Without Images

You can load documents without inline images to improve performance. Unloaded images appear as text enclosed in a box. After loading a document, you can load one or all of the missing images if you wish to see them.

To load documents in Enhanced Mosaic without images:

  1. Start Enhanced Mosaic and choose Preferences from the Edit menu.

    The Preferences dialog box appears.

  2. Choose Display from the drop-down list at the bottom of the dialog box.

    The Display panel appears.

  3. Clear the Load Images Automatically check box.
  4. Click the OK button.

Loading Missing Images

If you have configured Enhanced Mosaic to load documents without images, you can view the missing images by clicking the Load Missing Images toolbar button, or by choosing Load Missing Images from the Navigate menu.

Using Multiple Connections

Enhanced Mosaic can use up to five simultaneous network connections to load images, causing images in a document to load faster.

To use multiple connections:

  1. Start Enhanced Mosaic and choose Preferences from the Edit menu.

    The Preferences dialog box appears.

  2. Choose Miscellaneous from the drop-down list at the bottom of the dialog box.

    The Miscellaneous panel appears.

  3. Check the Use Multiple Connections check box.
  4. Click OK.

The Preferences dialog box closes, returning you to the document window.

Displaying Images Progressively

Enhanced Mosaic can display images in a document as it loads them, rather than displaying them all at once after it loads the entire document.

To display images progressively:

  1. Start Enhanced Mosaic and choose Preferences from the Edit menu.

    The Preferences dialog box appears.

  2. Choose Display from the drop-down list at the bottom of the dialog box.

    The Display panel appears.

  3. Check the Display Images Progressively check box.

Images in documents that specify the size of the inline images are displayed as they are loaded.

  4. Click either the Reformat Once After All Images radio button, or the Reformat After Each Image radio button.
  5. Click OK.

The Preferences dialog box closes, returning you to the document window.

Using a Disk Cache

Enhanced Mosaic can be configured to use a disk cache to store previously loaded documents on your local disk. When you access a cached document, Enhanced Mosaic loads the document from your local disk rather than the network, increasing the speed with which the document is loaded.

To use a disk cache:

  1. Start Enhanced Mosaic and choose Preferences from the Edit menu.

    The Preferences dialog box appears.

  2. Choose Cache from the drop-down list at the bottom of the dialog box.

    The Cache panel appears.

  3. In the Cache Size Limit field, enter the amount of disk space in kilobytes to reserve for cached files. The default cache size is 2048 KB.
  4. From the Verify Cache drop-down list, choose how often to check network documents for revisions. The available options are:
  5. To cause Enhanced Mosaic to erase the documents stored in the disk cache when you exit Enhanced Mosaic, check the Flush Cache on Exit check box.

To cause Enhanced Mosaic to retain the documents in the disk cache when exiting, clear the Flush Cache on Exit check box. Enhanced Mosaic exits faster if this check box is cleared.

  6. Click OK.

The Preferences dialog box closes, returning you to the document window.
