Configuring Machine (Host) Names

Most users use a machine or host name rather than their IP address when using TCP/IP applications because machine names are easier to remember. For example, you can name a machine daisy, so that you do not need to use the IP address.

For the host name to be useful, your network administrator must associate the name with your IP address in the DNS server. This allows everyone to refer to your machine using the host name rather than the IP address.

Once you have told your network administrator your desired host name, and the DNS server has been updated, identify the name to Cisco TCP/IP Suite:

  1. Start the Configuration Utility and choose the Global tab.
  2. Enter the host name in the PC Host Name field.
  3. Enter your network's domain name in the Local Domain Name field. Your network administrator can tell you this name if you do not know it.
  4. Click Done and save your changes. Restart Windows so that the change takes effect.
