Working in a Telnet Session

While you are in an active session, Telnet gives you many options including:

The following sections describe these activities in more detail.

Copying and Pasting Telnet Session Contents

Telnet lets you copy and paste the contents of the current Telnet buffer to another application.

To copy and paste text when using Telnet:

  1. Position your pointer at the beginning of the text you want to copy.
  2. Press and hold the left mouse button down while dragging the pointer to the end of the section you would like to copy. If you double-click, you select a word; if you triple-click, you select a line.
  3. Release the mouse button when you have selected the desired text. The selected text appears in reverse video. Select copy from the Edit menu to copy the selection to the clipboard.
  4. Open the desired application, or move the cursor to the location in which you want to paste the selection.
  5. Click the right mouse button, or choose Paste from the Edit menu. Telnet enters the selection at the cursor location. If you did not select any text, Telnet pastes the current contents of the clipboard at the cursor location. Likewise, you can copy and paste to and from any application that supports the Windows clipboard.

Setting Telnet Session Options

To set Telnet options for your current session:

  1. Click the Settings button on the toolbar or choose Settings... from the Options menu.

The Active Settings dialog box appears.

  2. If you are in TN5250 or TN3270 modes the corresponding tab appears.

When you are in an active session, some options are grayed. These options have been established for this session and cannot be changed while you are connected to the remote host.

  3. Set the desired options.

For information on setting options, refer to "Setting up Telnet Profiles" on page 213.

  4. When you are done, you can:

Saving Telnet Session Contents

If desired, you can save the contents of your current Telnet session buffer in a file for later review. The size of the buffer depends on the number of lines specified in the Scroll Back Lines field on the Display tab of the Settings dialog box. The maximum number of lines you can save in the buffer is 32,000, but may be limited by the amount of available memory.

Note

If any portion of the screen is selected, only that portion is saved.

To save session contents in a file:

  1. Choose Save to File from the File menu. The Save As dialog box appears.
  2. Specify the desired path and file name.
  3. Click Save to save the session buffer contents in the file. Click Cancel to close the Save As dialog box without saving the contents of the session buffer.

If you click Save, Telnet saves the session buffer contents in the specified file.

Printing Telnet Session Contents

This section describes how to print from a Telnet session. The topics are:

Printing Scroll Back Buffer Contents

You can increase or decrease the scroll back buffer size. The size of the buffer depends on the number of lines specified in the Scroll Back Lines field on the Display tab of the Settings dialog box. The maximum number of lines you can save in the buffer is 32,000, but may be limited by the amount of available memory.

Printing the Current Screen

You can print the contents to the screen by mapping the appropriate keyboard map Print Screen key (labeled PRN on the VT keyboard map, PrtSc on the TN3270 keyboard map, and print on the TN5250 keyboard map) to a key on the PC keyboard. For information on mapping keys, refer to "Mapping Keys" on page 233. After you map a key, press this key to send the contents of the current display to the Windows default printer.

Note

Telnet supports host initiated printing in the VT terminal emulation. Print data from the host will be sent to the Windows default printer.
