Connecting to a Host with Telnet

To connect to a host using Telnet:

  1. Start the Telnet application.

    The Connect dialog box appears.

  2. In the Host field, enter the host name or IP address of the remote host.
  3. To create a profile for this host, check the Create Profile check box. See "Setting up Telnet Profiles" on page 213 for information on creating profiles.

    Note

If you are using Windows 3.x, there is also a New Window check box on the Connect dialog box. Check this box to spawn a new Telnet window for this session.

  4. Click Connect.

Telnet closes the Connect dialog box and displays status messages while connecting to the remote host.

When Telnet establishes a connection, the Telnet application window appears so you can log into the remote host.

Once you have logged into the remote host, you can perform any activities you normally would while logged in. When you are done, log out as usual.

Telnet supports multiple, simultaneous sessions. While connected to a remote host, you can open the Connect dialog box and connect to another host by clicking the Connect button on the toolbar. Once connected to the second remote host, a second Telnet application window opens, letting you interact with the second host. Several sessions can run simultaneously in this manner.
