Student Opportunities
Are you interested in learning volunteer opportunities, student leadership opportunities, or networking opportunities in sustainability? Do you want to be looped into student sustainability action? Join our interest list or follow our instagram (@carletonsustain) to learn opportunities to engage or reach out to the sustainability office to collaborate (sustainability@carleton.edu).
Activities include: climate action and storytelling conversations & workshops, sustainability tours, farm harvest and food systems activities, zero waste audits, mending, repairing, transportation forums, and community science to learn with our community and engage city and rural development.
We strive to support individuals, operations, and systemic change needed to address the climate crisis.
Our office hires 8-12 sustainability assistants and 2-4 farm interns every year.
Sustainability Across the Curriculum, & Living Laboratory Education
Carleton has named sustainability across the curriculum an institutional priority and has committed to deepening living laboratory experiences on campus and in our community. This will mean new resources to support sustainability education and experiential opportunities for students. We will engage through professional development and community building activities that support us in building a shard identity for sustainability and environmental justice literacy. In addition, we plan to develop shared agendas for education, research, and action projects around the places and issues that matter to us. For example, how can we deepen connections to advance food justice and sustainable agriculture through our courses, farm and local food internships, research, partnerships and more.
Campus Community
Let us know what you are doing to advance climate action or how we can spread the word about your upcoming sustainability events, especially to student audiences. We’re happy to share exciting things that are happening in sustainability through our interest list (sustainability@carleton.edu).
Sustainability Revolving Fund
The Sustainability Revolving Fund (SRF) supports student-initiated projects that reduce Carleton’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Currently, SRF projects must also lead to monetary savings. The Sustainability Revolving Fund was created when Carleton College agreed to match a donation made by the Carleton Students Association (CSA) and the Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC). Jim Haughn (class of ’83) raised donations from his class by riding his bike 800 miles from Toledo, Ohio to his Carleton Class Reunion in Northfield. “Jim’s Bright Idea” raised nearly $14,000 additional dollars. The SRF is not currently active while we explore models to expand participation in sustainability solutions projects.
