    Wind Turbine

Though slightly hindered by a six-day period of downtime in the middle of the month, Carleton’s wind turbine still produced 215,634 kilowatt hours of clean and renewable electricity this past February, averting some 171.16 tons of carbon dioxide (based on 2004 EPA data for the state of Minnesota) from being emitted into the atmosphere. February 18th, 2007 was the most productive day at the turbine: winds of an average of 25 miles per hour generated 34,862 kilowatt hours over the course of the 24-hour period.

In other Minnesota wind energy news, the University of Minnesota-Morris has received three Clean Renewable Energy Bonds from the IRS to build a second wind turbine on its campus, build a steam turbine atop a biomass facility, and purchase another off-campus wind turbine. We at Shrinking Footprints want to congratulate UMM, and also hope to make similar progress in making the Carleton campus, as well as the state of Minnesota, a more sustainable place.
