Arboretum Volunteer Work Event

Sat, November 15, 2025 • 10:00am - 12:30pm (2h 30m) • 32737 Canada Avenue. This is the southern parking lot along Canada Avenue serving the Lower Arboretum.
Help restore the forests of the Lower Arboretum by protecting young trees from winter deer browse! In the winter hungry deer search out the buds of trees and shrubs. We protect our new trees by hiding their top bud inside a small paper bag which is stapled closed. Deer are visual feeders, so don't detect the bud inside the bag. Once the tip of the tree is above the height of a deer mouth we no longer have to protect the tree. Since we plant new trees each year there are always trees to protect in this way.
Meet in the Lower Arboretum at the most southern parking lot along Canada Avenue.  Watch for staff directing you to parking as this parking area is small. If you are a student that needs a ride let us know when you sign up. The Arboretum staff will provide all needed equipment, you just need to dress for the weather. Contact Nancy Braker, nbraker@carleton.edu or 507-222-4543 with questions. Please sign up so we can let you know if we need to change our plans due to bad weather.
