Geographic Indigenous Futures

Dr. Niiyokamigaabaw Deondre Smiles (Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe) is an adjunct professor at the Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability at the University of British Columbia. Their work focuses on Indigenous cultural and political responses to anthropogenic climate/environmental changes, particularly on land/space-based cultural and political resurgence. They serve as the director of a community-based research group, the Geographic Indigenous Futures Collaboratory, which works closely with Indigenous communities on geographical projects. Dr. Smiles serves in various Indigenous-related leadership roles in the American Association of Geographers (AAG) and the Canadian Association of Geographers (CAG). They hold a bachelor's degree in geography from St. Cloud State University, a master's degree in Global Indigenous Studies from the University of Minnesota Duluth, and a PhD in geography from The Ohio State University, where they also held a postdoctoral fellowship in Indigenous Environmental History.
