The Summer Liberal Arts Institute (SLAI) requires full-time residence at Carleton College for the duration of the program and attendance of all classes while participating in the program. Participants are not allowed to enroll in additional virtual academic programs while attending SLAI. Prior to arrival, all students must sign waivers and agree to SLAI’s code of conduct and attendance policy.
Weekday Schedule
Upon arrival, Summer Carls will receive a detailed schedule outlining their daily classes and other programming commitments. Though the specifics of each day may change, students can expect to attend class from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Monday through Friday with a 1.5 hour break for lunch. Some programs may require additional evening or weekend field trips.
While students will frequently receive free choice of afternoon/evening activities during the program, students can expect this to be an all-in experience and should not expect to be excused from campus, with the exception of medical appointments and local religious services. This includes weekends outside of visiting hours. Anyone seeking an exception to this must email summer@carleton.edu to make an exception request. Please note: exceptions to this policy are rarely granted.
Weekend Schedule
For students remaining on campus during weekends, special field trips and activities will be offered. Students can expect to also have unstructured free-time to visit downtown Northfield, or further explore campus at a relaxed pace.
Sunday Visiting Hours
Family members are welcome to visit their student during the Institute. However, due to busy student schedules and our aim to cultivate a true college experience, visits must be scheduled on: Sundays between 12:00 pm – 3:30 pm.
SLAI policy requires students to check in and out with our staff. We ask that you stay in Northfield to spend time with your student. If a family member outside of the student’s parent/guardian would like to participate in visiting hours, parents must provide permission by writing to the Director at summer@carleton.edu. If permission has not been granted prior to the visit, staff may refuse to transfer care of the student to the visiting family member.
