Jonah (Marq) is a quiet kid, fairly reserved, a little strange and confusing at times. Quite good at frisbee: throws it pretty far, can break the mark, can play good defense, another shorter good handler; but outside of his frisbee ability, I really don’t know a ton about him. Except for one story which, in lieu of other information, I will provide below.
I’m sitting in LDC one day, alone, and Marq comes up to me and sits down. We got to talking, asked him how his classes were going and whatnot, he asked me the same. Our conversation came crawling to somewhat of a dry standstill; jokingly, I asked him what his life mission was, expecting maybe a joke or reasonably vague answer for a freshman in college.
The story he told for the next forty five minutes shook me to my core. It wasn’t disturbing, necessarily, but certainly peculiar. He told me about how, for all his life, he’s had trouble connecting. Really connecting, emotionally. With friends, romantically, even with his own parents, he’s always felt an uneasy distance – a gap. All these people around him for years and years, indulging in the strong emotions of love and connection while he was left hollow, isolated, alone. He said he hadn’t found anything until he found some communities online in high school. Now, he seemed to retreat into a state of reserved bashfulness at this point in his story, chewing his LDC chicken after having just sort of trailed off, lost in thought and remembrance. Now, I must admit, my curiosity got the best of me, and instead of respectfully changing the topic of conversation I pressed him on it, goading him to tell me more about this “community”.
Long story short, through a long winding system of reddit rabbit-holes and 4-chan boards, he said that he finally realized his life mission to create a robotic, fully-customizable, emotionally-responsive life partner. He has simply been dissatisfied with people, every person he has ever met, and so he has resolved to create his own. A being that surpasses the limitations of personal space and emotional intelligence. He has dedicated his life to this Frankestinian task, resolving to slave away at his studies of math and the natural sciences for the rest of his life until he had made his ultimate metallic mate. And, with a tearful eye of utmost sincerity, he resolved to me that even if he never accomplishes his goal, if never even comes close to creating “The One”, he would have at least spent his life in the pursuit of something worth feeling for.
I asked him if he seriously wanted a dirty frickin’ grease clanker for a wife – he said yes. I have never looked at him the same since.
