RESIDENTIAL LIFE WINTER BREAK OFFICE HOURS
Monday through Friday
9:00am to 4:30pm

Staying on campus during College Break Periods is not guaranteed as part of enrollment. Break Housing is an option only for students who have a verified reason to be on campus.  During break, all Carleton College policies apply and can be found at go.carleton.edu/handbook.  Some additional policies apply. Please read below for details.

Failure to adhere to policies and guidelines may result in impact future requests.

IMPORTANT DEADLINES AND CANCELLATION POLICY

Break Housing Applications are due by Monday, October 30. Applications received after this date will result in a $50 Administrative Fee in addition to break housing costs if approved. Students who submit a late requests may not be approved and can expect delayed communication.

Changes or cancellations to an existing reservation must be sent to reslife@carleton.edu by Friday, November 10 to receive a full refund.

Students approved to change rooms between terms will be expected to completely vacate their Fall Term assignment and move into their Winter Term assignment by Tuesday, November 21 unless they are moving to an offline residential building/house. More detailed information will be sent directly to students for whom this applies.

CONDUCT POLICIES DURING WINTER BREAK

  • Residential locations close at 2:00pm on Tuesday, November 21 for those who have not been approved for break housing.
  • No overnight guests allowed.  
  • Quiet Hours are from 11:00pm – 7:00am daily.
  • Unless coordinated by a campus department, large events are not permitted in the residential areas during College Break Periods.
  • Food kept in shared/public kitchenettes must be clearly labeled. Items without proper labeling will be discarded.
  • Kitchen and lounge surfaces must be kept clear of personal belongings to ensure Custodial Staff are able to clean shared spaces.
  • All room and common spaces furnishings provided must remain in their original space. 

LEAVING CAMPUS DURING BREAK

Complete the checklist below if you are leaving campus as part of Fall Term closing or if you are leaving campus during break. Each room will be checked by Residential Life Staff to ensure the task list is completed.

  • Turn the thermostat on and set it to 68 degrees.
  • Empty, defrost, and clean the College-owned micro-fridge. View Cleaning Instructions.
  • Remove trash and recycling from the room and deposit into an outside waste container.
  • Remove ALL perishable food from including items in the refrigerator.
  • All electronics should be unplugged including power strips.
  • Close and lock windows (including storm windows).
  • Turn lights off.
  • Lock door.
  • Take your key with you if you are returning to the same room!

ADDITIONAL SAFETY INFORMATION

  • In case of an emergency, where ambulance, police or fire personnel are required, call 911 immediately (from campus phones, dial 8-911). In other instances in which assistance is needed, call Security Services at 507-222-4444.  Security Services is available 24-hours a day. Please contact them if you have any safety concerns for yourself or others.
  • Students who lose or misplace their key can visit Residential Life Monday-Friday between 9:00am and 4:30pm to check-out a spare key. Outside of these hours please contact Security for temporary assistance.
  • Students who lose or misplace their OneCard should visit the OneCard Office during regular business hours to have a new OneCard printed. Outside of these hours please contact Security for temporary assistance.

BORROWING A ROOM FROM A PEER

  • Residential Life will issue you a temporary key. Do not borrow the key that was issued to the permanent resident. Visit Residential Life to pick up a spare key or to have your OneCard Encoded (only those borrowing a space in James) on Tuesday, November 21 between 9:00am and 4:30pm.
  • Complete your move to your temporary space by 11:00am on Wednesday, November 22. 
  • On Wednesday, December 20, return to your Winter Term housing assignment. Fully vacate your temporary space and return the key by 9:00am on Thursday, December 21. 
  • You will be held responsible for any damages to the permanent occupant’s personal belongings.  Any charges for cleaning or repair as a result of your stay will be charged to your student account.  Please be respectful of the borrowed space and leave it in good condition.

BORROWING A ROOM FROM RESIDENTIAL LIFE

  • Pick up your temporary key from Residential Life on Tuesday, November 21 between 9:00am and 4:30pm.
  • Complete your move to your temporary space by 11:00am on Wednesday, November 22.
  • On Wednesday, December 20, return to your Winter Term housing assignment. Fully vacate the temporary space and return the key by 9:00am on Thursday, December 21.
