SHAC does not provide any testing or evaluation for students with suspected Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The health care providers at SHAC do not write initial or maintenance prescriptions for ADHD medications. SHAC can provide a list of resources for such services in Northfield and the surrounding area. Many Carleton students choose to obtain an ADHD assessment with providers in their home area during academic breaks.
For Students Already Diagnosed with ADHD Continuing Treatment with Home Prescriber:
Many students with ADHD are well-managed with medication, needing only intermittent follow-up appointments, so they continue care with their home prescribers. Northfield pharmacies can fill prescriptions for ADHD medications written by out-of-town (including out-of-state) providers as long as the prescription is presented in paper form and includes the prescriber’s active DEA number. These medications are designated as ‘controlled substances. By law, prescriptions cannot be phoned to a pharmacy or sent electronically and can be written for only a one-month supply. With that in mind, prescriptions can be dated the day they are written and indicate usage for a specific month. For example a student can visit a home provider in August, before coming to Carleton, and receive 3 paper prescriptions, one each for September, October, and November, all indicating the date of that August visit. The student then takes one paper prescription to a Northfield pharmacy to fill each month.
