Objective of the position:

To complete, refine, and support implementation of a mobile application for use by college-student mentors, parents of young mentees, the Project Friendship organization, and potentially mentees in support of the youth mentoring mission of the organization, under the supervision and guidance of a professional software engineer. 

Duties:

  • Work independently on app development with the guidance of a professional developer mentor. 
  • Offer creative ideas/solutions to development and function of the app.
  • Develop and implement a plan for continuous support of the app. 
  • Bring the app development into completion using systems already in places and being developed. 
  • Complete necessary tasks in allotted time being committed to the development of the app.
  • Assist with deployment of the new app. 
  • Be available for issues that arise with implementing a new app. 

Qualifications: 

  • Programming experience in most or all of the following technologies:
    • JavaScript language 
    • ReactNative mobile application framework 
    • Expo development platform 
    • Node Express server framework 
    • RESTful API server development 
    • Familiarity with SQL databases, using a database management system such as Postgres or MySQL 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills 
  • Overall interest in computer programming is a must

Hours and Additional Details:

  • The App Developer/Computer Programmer will be assigned weekly hours based on the needs of the program. Typically working 4-6 hrs/wk in this position, though more or less is negotiable. Assigned hours are not to exceed the students’ awarded hours, a maximum of 8 hrs/wk for first-year students, 10 hrs/wk for sophomores through seniors.
  • Evaluation will occur at the end of the year. 

Transportation to off-campus work site:

Students are responsible for getting themselves to and from their work site, and they are compensated for travel time. Work for this position will primarily take place on campus.
