Objective of the position: To motivate and guide Northfield students’ academic success through weekly tutoring and mentoring sessions.
TORCH works to support and empower Northfield youth in graduating from high school and pursuing future goals, with an intentional focus on partnering with Northfield’s students of color, those from low-income families, and potential first-generation college attendees. The TORCH Program Assistant(s) would work directly with TORCH students on academic and social-emotional support. This includes tutoring, offering a listening ear to students facing challenges, helping connect students to resources, serving as a mentor, and helping students understand how their choices in High School can prepare them for success in college and careers.
Duties
- Commit to a weekly schedule of working at least two shifts at the High School (or remotely if the need arises)
- Build positive relationships with participating students
- Assist individual students or small groups with academic needs
- Follow up with participating students at least once per week, providing tutoring and other assistance as needed according to each individual’s needs and progress
- Communicate regularly with TORCH staff regarding student progress, emerging needs, etc.
- Meet all program expectations, including paperwork, background check, standards of conduct and attendance policies.

Hours
- TORCH Assistants are most successful when they spend at least two shifts per week in the TORCH room (for example, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 12-3 PM). This allows participating youth to get to know you and feel comfortable working with you.
- Assigned hours are not to exceed the students’ awarded hours, a maximum of 8 hrs/wk for first-year students, 10 hrs/wk for sophomores through seniors.
Evaluation will occur at the end of the year.
Transportation to off campus work site
Students are responsible for getting themselves to and from their work site and they may be compensated for travel time. Northfield High School is accessible via the Carlsgo! Shuttle Service.
