Office: PEPS/Academic Technology Media
Position: Student Team Lead
What do you do in this position?
I am directly responsible for editing campus videos, converting files, filming events and instructional videos, and connecting with faculty. I also set up audio for events, troubleshoot classroom technology problems, plan the student-staff schedule, answer the phone, and check out equipment.
How did you get your position?
After I was accepted to Carleton, I filled out the student work preference form. After doing well in a phone interview, I was hired to the PEPS team. Each summer, PEPS offers a few full-time positions. I picked up the ropes quickly and was promoted to team lead my sophomore year.
What new skills have you acquired?
I have developed technical and customer service skills while working for PEPS. I am now proficient in the entire Adobe suite, our scheduling software, teaching station technology, and all of the equipment in the checkout center. This past year I have also become more confident with video cameras and the chapel switcher. I am great at talking on the phone, and I know how to respond well under pressure.
How will your student employment experience help you in the future?
I am not interested in pursuing a tech-support or editing job after Carleton, but the skills I develop here will carry far into my future career. Having knowledge about technology may be the factor which gives me an edge over another job candidate. Also, if I ever pursue my dream of opening my own company, my graphic design skills will come in handy.
What type of person do you feel is best suited for these positions?
To succeed at PEPS, one must have basic tech knowledge, an ability to learn quickly, and a natural charisma with clients. We do a great job training incoming students, but they must be willing to adapt and respond to high-pressure scenarios on the spot.
What do you like best about your student employment position?
I love how every event I run for PEPS feels important. Our office motto is the following: “Our every day is our client’s big event.” By working hard, I gain the respect of faculty and make lasting connections. Additionally, the work environment at PEPS is very laid back. I have developed great relationships with my co-workers and bosses.
