Below is a bulleted list of some of the more obscure or not commonly known Carleton policies, guidelines, and resources related to chartered student organizations. Please see the Carleton Campus Handbook for additional information and a full list of college policies.

Student Organization Websites
Student organizations are not permitted to have websites hosted by off-campus servers. All student organizations must utilize the resources made available by Carleton’s ITS/Web Services regardless of the funding source. Exceptions to policy include KRLX and the Carletonian.

Food/Bake Sales
The Minnesota Department of Health provides specific guidance for food safety. Carleton College expects all campus suppliers, students and staff to follow the MDH guidance to ensure the safety of food served or sold on campus. Please refer to the MN Department of Health the University of Minnesota Extension, and the MN Department of Agriculture for more information. Food prepared and served or sold on campus by student organizations should be consumed with an understanding that products are homemade and not subject to state inspection. When selling items at a bake sale, the student organization must post a sign or placard stating “These products are homemade and not subject to state inspection.” Label food with your name and address, the date produced, and the ingredients, including potential allergens.

Electrical Devices and Appliances
Heat producing electrical devices may only be used in designated areas. Appliances such as hot plates, coffeemakers, irons, lava lamps, and space heaters are regulated by the State Fire Marshal. These types of appliances may be used in the kitchens or laundry rooms only.

Sports Involving Repeated Blows to the Head
Any sport or physical activity involving repeated blows to the head is not permitted on College property without written permission from the College’s Risk Management Officer.

Use of the Carleton College Name
No organization, group, or individual may use the College’s name without the express authorization of the College Council except to identify the institutional affiliation. College approval or disapproval of any policy may not be stated or implied by an individual, group, or organization.

Slacklines & Hammocks
Carleton College works to provide a safe environment and protect College property. Slacklines and hammocks can be dangerous if installed inappropriately or left unattended. They can also damage trees if installed for an extended period of time or attached to small branches. Any slackline or hammock installed without approval or found unattended will be removed and discarded. For additional information, please contact Carleton’s Grounds Manager in the Facilities Office or visit the Campus Handbook to review the full policy.

Student Run Businesses, Fundraising & Selling on Campus
Under no circumstance may students, faculty, and staff use the college as a personal or corporate business address or represent themselves as doing business on behalf of the college. Students, faculty, and staff may not use any college resources for personal business. Examples include campus mail, campus email addresses, listservs or CSA student operating budgets. Student organizations that wish to fundraise or solicit donations, must first contact the Director of Student Activities for authorization. CSA organizations are not authorized to open separate bank accounts, create separate business entities, or form other non-profit organizations that are affiliated with a CSA chartered student organization. Carleton College serves as the corporate entity for all CSA organizations and Workday provides accounting for the organization with a transparent, sustainable and transferrable financial infrastructure.

Activities on Reading Days & Finals
Reading Days provide time for significant review and study before the start of final examinations. The guidelines for Reading Days are intended to promote an academic value that is parallel to a scheduled class day. Reading Days are intended to be unscheduled to provide time for students to pursue academic work which is most appropriate for them. Students are not permitted to host activities or travel off-campus on Reading Days or when final exams are scheduled.

Use of Amplified Sound & Live Music Outside on Campus Property

Student use of amplified sound outside on college property is typically not permitted if it will disturb college business, class instruction, on-campus residents, or community members. Students interested in hosting an outdoor event that includes amplified sound (e.g., live band on Mai Fete), must complete the event registration form and meet with the Student Activities Office prior to the event.
