About the Karate Club
The Karate Club offers instruction in traditional Okinawan Karate to the Carleton student body. The aim of Karate is the perfection of the practitioner’s character, achieved through intensive physical training and mental discipline. The Karate Club is closely tied to the karate PE class, which meets twice a week to train under Sensei Steve Hatle. There is also training on Saturday morning, mixed with Northfield community members. The Shorin-Ryu form of karate, which the Carleton club practices, concentrates on perfection of the basics and katas. Karate is active all year around. Everyone from beginners to experts are welcome. The Carleton club is affiliated with the Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate Dojo of Northfield. The dojo is part of Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate USA, founded by Grand Master Ansei Ueshiro.
Club History
The Carleton Karate Club was founded in the 1960’s and has been training students ever since. Our Northfield dojo was founded in 2008 under Sensei Bob Dobrow, Carleton Professor (now emeritus) of Mathematics. The club now practices Shorin-Ryu Karate under Sensei Steve Hatle, San-Dan (third-degree black belt) and Shihan of the Northfield dojo.
