About the Karate Club

The Karate Club offers instruction in traditional Okinawan Karate to the Carleton student body. The aim of Karate is the perfection of the practitioner’s character, achieved through intensive physical training and mental discipline.

The Karate Club is closely tied to the karate PE class, which meets twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm-5:10pm. Beginning in the fall of 2024, the dojo is under Sempai David Huyck, Shihan of the new Ueshiro Carleton Karate Dojo. There is also training on Saturday morning from 10am until noon, mixed with Northfield community members. Learn more on the Ueshiro Carleton Karate Dojo website.

The Shorin-Ryu form of karate, which the Carleton club practices, concentrates on perfection of the basics and katas. Karate is active all year around. Everyone from beginners to experts are welcome. The Carleton dojo and club is closely affiliated with the Ueshiro Northfield Shorin-Ryu Karate Dojo, and both dojos are part of Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate USA, founded by Grand Master Ansei Ueshiro.

Club History

The Carleton Karate Club was founded in the 1960’s and has been training students ever since. Our Northfield dojo was founded in 2008 under Sensei Bob Dobrow, Carleton Professor (now emeritus) of Mathematics. After Sensei Dobrow’s retirement, Sensei Steve Hatle took on the role of Shihan from 2017 until 2024. In the fall of 2024, the Ueshiro Carleton Karate Dojo was established, separate from, but closely tied to, the Ueshiro Northfield Shorin-Ryu Karate Dojo. The Carleton Karate club now practices Shorin-Ryu Karate under Sempai David Huyck, Sho-Dan (first-degree black belt) and Shihan of the dojo.
