This past summer, four professors from the Spanish Department (Vera Coleman, Fernando Contreras, Claudia Lange, and Beatriz Pariente-Beltrán) received an Indigenous Engagement in Place grant, sponsored by the Mellon Foundation, which has allowed us to establish a relationship with a Nahua Indigenous community in Amatlán de Quetzalcóatl, Morelos, Mexico, and to collaborate on the design of a curricular unit for our SPAN 204 course.

As part of this collaboration, during Week 8, the three professors currently teaching Spanish 204—Vera Coleman, Beatriz Pariente-Beltrán, and Fernando Contreras—and their students will explore this community’s worldview, philosophy of life and system of governance through a series of videos and presentations. They will also have the unique opportunity to meet and talk directly with community members via Zoom. This event offers a meaningful opportunity to learn from Indigenous voices and explore new ways of connecting education, culture, and community. This event is open to the community and we would be delighted if you could join us.
