SOAN and ENTS major Julianna Baldo ’25 was featured in the 2025 Sustainability Office newsletter for being a recipient of the Stewsie Sustainability Award, which recognizes one Carleton student and one staff member who have made a notable impact on sustainability efforts at Carleton. Julianna was recognized for her “remarkable dedication to environmental activism, education, and community engagement throughout her time at Carleton.”

SOAN major Victoria Semmelhack ’25 was among three Carleton students awarded the prestigious Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, which supports graduating seniors during a year of independent exploration outside of the United States. The fellowship allows for deep, global engagement of a personal interest. Semmelhack will travel to Ghana, India, Australia, and Norway to explore childbirth knowledge and maternal healthcare policy.

Juan Garcia Reyes ’26 accepted into American Sociological Association (ASA) Honors Program
1 May 2025SOAN major and Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow Juan Garcia Reyes ’26 has been accepted into the 2025 American Sociological Association (ASA) Honors Program. This program introduces exceptional undergraduate sociology students to the professional life of the discipline through participation in special activities at the ASA Annual Meeting.

Cici Wang ’26 featured in Student Life Newsletter for launching Carleton’s first multilingual magazine
10 March 2025SOAN major Cici Wang ’26 was featured in the March 2025 Student Life Newsletter with fellow student Yiming Ma ’27 for launching Carleton’s first multilingual magazine In Other Words. The magazine will feature prose, poetry, and visual art by students, staff, and faculty in any language other than English, with English translations provided so readers can fully appreciate every submission. The team recently received an IDE Mini-grant from the Office of Inclusion, Equity, and Community, and are additionally supported by the Language Center, the Office of International Student Life, and the Writing Center.

Miah Francis ’26 featured in Carleton News for “Prairie Paper” research project Outside link
15 January 2025SOAN major Miah Francis ’26 was featured in the Carleton News with fellow student Tyler Chodera ’25 for assisting Professor of Art Jade Hoyer ’07 with the “Prairie Paper” research project. The project, which includes transforming local plant fibers in Carleton’s Cowling Arboretum into handmade paper, represents a convergence of artistic practice and ecological awareness, with hopes to produce an exhibition that will coincide with the Arb’s upcoming 150th anniversary celebrations.

8 October 2024SOAN major Bella Thomas ’25 was featured in the October 2024 Student Life Newsletter in the “Staff and Student Highlights” section for being a Student Wellness Advocate in the Office of Health Promotion. She is also a board member of the Black Student Alliance, Captain of the Varsity Women’s Basketball team, and President of the BIPOC Student-Athlete Collective.

Julianna Baldo ’25 and Grace Bassekle ’25 to present at Upper Midwest Association of Campus Sustainability meeting
12 September 2024SOAN majors Julianna Baldo ’25 and Grace Bassekle ’25 will present at the upcoming Upper Midwest Association of Campus Sustainability (UMACS) meeting at Macalester with colleagues Demetrius Blackmon Jimenez ’24, Nico Bolling ’27, Sadie DiCarlo ’25, Alex Dudnyk ’27, Lillian Fisher ’25, and Elena Prichard ’25. The presentation is titled “Carleton’s Students Take Climate Action” and will focus on student project activities engaging transportation, food emissions and food systems, energy tours, storytelling, and community science monitoring.

Moe Kojima ’24 presents at American College Dance Conference with Carleton Semaphore Repertory Dance Company
11 April 2024SOAN major and GWSS minor Moe Kojima ’24 presented before a national panel of adjudicators at the American College Dance Conference, held this year at St. Olaf, with the Carleton Semaphore Repertory Dance Company. The company performed in the adjudicated concert with works by guest artist Elayna Waxse and by senior dance major d’Auria. Kojima performed an original solo in the Informal Concert.
