Cheryl Yin interviewed by The 19th about Khmer Girls in Action non-profit Outside link
22 February 2024Cheryl Yin, assistant professor of anthropology at Carleton, was interviewed and quoted in an article for the news website The 19th about a non-profit called Khmer Girls in Action (KGA) in Long Beach, California that primarily serves Cambodian American youths whose parents resettled in the U.S. as refugees. As a Cambodian American and native of Long Beach, Yin shared her thoughts on the valuable work KGA is doing in the community.

15 December 2023Pamela Feldman-Savelsberg, Broom Professor of Social Demography and Anthropology at Carleton, presented a lecture titled “What Do (Cameroonian Migrant) Women Want? Obstetric Choice and Mutual Stereotyping in Berlin” at a seminar on migration and health at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris.

Pamela Feldman-Savelsberg, Broom Professor of Social Demography and Anthropology at Carleton, co-organized and attended the conference Red Lines, Red Tapes: Ethical Challenges in Sensitive Research in Social Sciences and Humanities. Funded by the European Research Council, the conference was held at the University of Warsaw, Poland, November 30–December 2, 2023.

28 September 2023Pamela Feldman-Savelsberg, Broom Professor of Social Demography and Anthropology at Carleton, has been named as a research partner of the Otto-Hahn Gender, Migration and Social Mobility research group at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle, Germany. She will be collaborating with Dr. Anaïs Ménard, head of the research group, on the project, “Transnational Hearthholds? Exploring Female-Centered Units in Migration.”

Annette Nierobisz appointed to endowed chair at Carleton Outside link
22 September 2023Annette Nierobisz, Ada M. Harrison Distinguished Teaching Professor of the Social Sciences, was appointed to endowed chair at Carleton with nine other professors during fall 2023. Endowed chairs provide recognition and support for superb educators who help sustain Carleton’s tradition of teaching excellence.

Pamela Feldman-Savelsberg published in Se (dé)placer: Mobilités sociales et migrations book
15 June 2023Pamela Feldman-Savelsberg, Broom Professor of Social Demography and Anthropology at Carleton, published a chapter called “S’élever et se maintenir” in Se (dé)placer: Mobilités sociales et migrations, a volume of collected essays published by the Presses Universitaires de Provence. The book contributes to public debates in France regarding immigration and “identity insecurity,” countering prejudice with investigations into the interaction of social mobility and migration.

Annette Nierobisz receives Franklin Research Grant from American Philosophical Society Outside link
30 March 2023Annette Nierobisz, Ada M. Harrison Distinguished Teaching Professor of the Social Sciences at Carleton, received a Franklin Research Grant from the American Philosophical Society (APS) for work toward completing her co-authored book, “American Idle: Late Career Job Loss in a Neoliberal Era.” The oldest learned society in the U.S. (est. 1743), APS continues to pursue its original mission of “promoting useful knowledge” through grants, fellowships, and public outreach. Support from APS will allow Annette and her co-author, Professor Dana Sawchuk of Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Canada, to conduct and analyze data gathered in follow-up interviews, and to collaboratively work toward completing their manuscript.

Pamela Feldman-Savelsberg’s book chosen by Big Ten Academic Alliance for inclusion in “Big Ten Open Books: Gender & Sexuality Studies” open-access collection
30 March 2023Pamela Feldman-Savelsberg, Broom Professor of Social Demography and Anthropology at Carleton and co-director of Africana Studies, had her book “Plundered Kitchens, Empty Wombs” chosen by the Big Ten Academic Alliance for inclusion in its selection of university press books for the soon-to-be-launched open access collection, “Big Ten Open Books: Gender & Sexuality Studies.” The collection will be hosted on the University of Michigan’s Fulcrum eBook site.
