SOAN and Dance alum Phil Chan ’06 will deliver Carleton College’s convocation address on Friday, May 6th. As a dancer and arts advocate, he will discuss his journey navigating conversations around race, representation, and inclusion in the performing arts.

SOAN major and Cross-Cultural Studies minor Ooi Win Wen ’22 was featured in Carleton News article “Meet three Carls presenting at the annual Student Research and Internship Symposium.” Ooi is among more than 150 students who will attend the annual Student Research and Internship Symposium and share their work in internships and research projects from the past summer.

SOAN and French alum Izzy Durham ’12, a PhD candidate in anthropology at Princeton University, published a piece in Anthropology News titled “What’s So Funny about Ohio’s Vaccine Lottery?” about Ohio’s Vax-a-Million jokes.

SOAN and Dance alum Phil Chan ’06 was recently interviewed by CBS News about his “Final Bow for Yellowface” campaign that aims to get companies to pledge to eliminate Asian stereotypes in ballet performances.

Every year, Carleton brings outstanding academics to campus for public talks, class visits, and meetings with faculty and students through the Chesley Lectureship program. This fall, the Sociology and Anthropology department chose to invite Dorothy Roberts, scholar of Africana studies, sociology, and law at the University of Pennsylvania.

SOAN alum Hannah Aylward ’19 and her boyfriend Shane Burcaw have a popular YouTube channel called “Squirmy and Grubs.” The channel strives to normalize and destigmatize their interabled relationship. They have captured the hearts and minds of their audiences through their love and humor. They were recently featured on Instagram TV and the Today Show for Valentine’s Day!
