History of SVPAAC
The NCAA Board of Governors passed the Policy on Campus Sexual Violence (NCAA policy) in August 2017, which requires that each academic year, NCAA schools have attested their compliance with the NCAA policy. The annual attestation period runs from March 1 to May 15. If a school is not able to attest to its compliance with the NCAA policy, it will be prohibited from hosting any NCAA championship competitions for the next applicable academic year.
The NCAA Policy Requirements include the following three expectations:
- The athletics department is informed on, integrated in, and compliant with institutional policies and processes regarding sexual violence prevention and proper adjudication and resolution of acts of sexual violence.
- The institutional policies and processes regarding sexual violence prevention and adjudication, and the name and contact information for the campus Title IX coordinator*, are readily available within the department of athletics, and are provided to student-athletes.
- All student-athletes, coaches and staff have been educated each year on sexual violence prevention, intervention and response, to the extent allowable by state law and collective bargaining agreements.
In January 2020 the Sexual Violence Prevention Athletics Advisory Committee (SVPAAC) was formed to provide student-athletes perspectives and input to our PEAR athletic administration and Sexual Violence Prevention Coordinator pertaining to sexual prevention education, resources, and training. This Committee was originally formed by PEAR Administration to include student-athletes who voiced their opinions to PEAR Administrators regarding educational options. PEAR Administrators took this input and formed SVPAAC with the recently funded Sexual Violence Prevention Coordinator from the SMPR office.
The Sexual Violence Prevention Athlete Advisory Committee (SVPAAC) is made up of student-athletes, representing both PEAR club and varsity sports, who play an integral role in changing the culture on our campus around sexual violence. The committee is chaired by the Sexual Violence Prevention Coordinator in Carleton’s Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response (SMPR) office, the Athletic Director, the Senior Woman Administrator, and the Director of Sport Clubs from the PEAR department
This advisory committee meets several times each academic term. The primary goal of this committee is to provide student suggestions, reactions, insights, and opinions concerning sexual violence prevention programming, contributing toward the ultimate prevention goal of creating a campus community free of violence, where all students are able to learn and thrive. In the Spring of 2020, SVPAAC created a survey and encouraged 271 of their club and varsity peers to fill out the survey asking what issues they most want to be educated on in the 2020-21 year. The topics that rose to the top included: how to support a friend, bystander intervention, sexual harassment, toxic masculinity, and thintersection of alcohol and sexual misconduct.
From this suggested list, the SMPR office created programming for 2020-21 that, because of COVID, allowed athletic teams to participate in ZOOM sessions around these topics. Each year SVPAAC reviews the education sessions, gives feedback, and helps create new programming options for the upcoming year. In 2022 SVPAAC is working towards expanding membership, engaging in a promotion plan, and planning a large SVPAAC event.
