Ziliang “Alex” Liu ’12, Art History SRP

Ziliang Liu collaborated as an Art History Student Research Partner (SRP) with Prof. Katie Ryor during both winter and summer breaks in 2011 on an exciting project involving an exhibition and catalogue essay focused on 17th century Chinese painting.

While Ziliang had already completed one art museum internship (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Summer 2010), it was this in-depth research experience with a Carleton faculty member that cemented his decision to pursue a PhD in Chinese art history.

After receiving a fellowship for a MA, he is currently completing his PhD in Han dynasty tomb art at Harvard and has a bright future in academia ahead of him.

Engaging in art historical research has turned me into a rather odd traveler — instead of visiting cities for their scenic beauty or famous sites, I chase after relics of antiquities from one museum to another, which has fundamentally shaped the way I learn and think about places cultures, and their history.
