A multi-platform endeavor, The Wandering House features an ice-fishing house retrofitted as a mobile audio-recording studio. With support from the Public Works Initiative at Carleton, along with multiple partners in southern Minnesota, professor Cecilia Cornejo — originally from Chile and a long-time resident of the American Midwest — invited community members in Northfield and Lanesboro to record their thoughts on home, a shifting concept as more people around the globe become displaced.

Professor Cornejo and her student researchers, Sergio Demara ’20 and Arya Misra ’22, spent the summer of 2019 collecting these oral testimonies in Northfield. They took The Wandering House to a variety of locations and captured a wide range of voices. Over winter 2020, Professor Cornejo began to delve into this wealth of material and worked again with Misra, Demara and Cecilia Kryzda ’20, to transcribe all the recordings.
