Kristin Bloomer has been awarded a Broom Public Scholarship

Kristin Bloomer has been awarded a Broom Public Scholarship of $1,000 to support research in
Sri Lanka conducted in concert with two young Tamil scholars from South India and several
writers, religious, and lay Sri Lankan Tamils who serve as teachers, guides, and informants. In
addition to sharing her work with the French Institute of Pondicherry in Tamil Nadu, India, and
with the American Institute of Lankan Studies in Colombo, Bloomer will present part of this
work in November 2024 at the American Academy of Religion (AAR) Annual Conference in a
paper entitled, “Mary on the Northern Front: Two Tamil women’s healing practices during and
after the Sri Lankan Civil War.” In the summer of 2024, she conducted preliminary research with
support from a Carleton Student Research Partner, Carlos Trejo ’26.
