Mapping Japan through Carleton’s Hidden Map Collection

Mapping Japan through Carleton’s Hidden Map Collection (Panel Discussion)
May 22, noon-1pm @ Rm 402 of Leighton Hall
Map Open House
May 22, 1:15-3pm @ Rm 170 of Gould Library
Panel discussion about Carleton’s map collection, followed by the map open house organized by Professor Asuka Sango and the students in her class, “Mapping Japan, the Real and the Imagined.” We will introduce you to our collection of Japanese maps—both modern and premodern—including both the maps created in Japan and the maps of Japan created by US government agencies. The modern collection was largely forgotten until the 2020s, and the premodern collection only began to be built around the same time. Carleton Japanese map collection is emerging! The pioneering scholar of Japanese intelligence maps, Professor Shigeru Kobayashi (Osaka University, Emeritus) will give special remarks.
Sponsored by: Japan Foundation NY, Asian Studies, MARS, History, Religion CCCE
Lunch catered by Desi Diner.
The panel discussion is followed by the map open house where we will walk you through this emerging collection of rare Japanese maps.
