Film Showing: Destiny (1997)

Fri, October 20, 2023 • 4:00pm - 6:00pm (2h) • Sayles Hill Lounge

Screening of Destiny (1997) or المصير, a celebrated Egyptian film set in Andalusia about the famed 12th-century Muslim polymath, Ibn Rushd or Averroes (1126-1198), was commonly referred to in medieval philosophical texts as the Commentator (on Aristotle). This is a historically rich drama directed by one the most internationally accomplished Egyptian filmmakers, Youssef Chahine.

When Destiny was released, it was celebrated for the compelling way it drew on the intellectual and lived histories of Muslims to intervene in contemporary debates about the role of religion and reason in public life. It received many accolades, including the prestigious OCIC award at the Amiens International Film Festival and a Palme d'Or nomination at the Cannes Film Festival.

The screening will be at the Sayles Hill Lounge on Friday, October 20th, from 4 to 6 PM.

Sponsored by the Religion Department. Food will be provided during the screening.
