Exam Information

Where & When

Rooms and Room Changes

All examinations will be held in the same rooms in which classes have been held during the term unless the Registrar’s Office has assigned you to a different examination room. If you need a larger room for exams, please call the Registrar’s Office, extension 4289. IF IT IS POSSIBLE, we will assign your class to a larger classroom.

Self-Scheduled Exams are held in Olin 149.

Exam Schedule

The Exam Schedule assigns an exam date and time based on class meeting time. Exams cannot be rescheduled. For more information and possible exceptions, see the Examinations section of the current Academic Regulations and Procedures.

Self-Scheduled Exams for Faculty

Faculty may designate their final examinations as either optional or mandatory self-schedulable. If a final examination is self-schedulable, this means that a student may decide to take the final exam during any of the ten final exam slots.

  • If the instructor is offering the course as an optional self-scheduled exam, during the last week of classes, students inform the instructor that they intend to self-schedule the final in the course. The instructor will notify the Registrar of this intent by providing the office with an individually labeled examination envelope containing the student’s examination. If the instructor wishes to allow the student to use any additional aids for the tests, those must be included in the envelope that is provided to the Registrar’s Office. Students may bring no materials with them to their seat at the testing site, except pencils or pens and their examination envelope. They may also bring a calculator to a calculator-aided exam.
  • If the instructor is only offering the exam as a self-scheduled exam, the instructor will provide the Registrar’s Office with all of the examinations
  • Examinations will need to be delivered to the Registrar’s Office by 4:30 p.m. the day after the last day of classes (unless the term ends on a Friday, then the exams will be due by the final Thursday in the term at 4:30).
  • Examinations can be picked up by the instructor either at the test-site with an appropriate photo ID or at the Registrar’s Office on the day after the final day of exams.

More information for students about arriving and taking their exams is available below.

Self-Scheduled Exams for Students

Some faculty will also designate their final examinations as either optional or mandatory self-schedulable. If a final examination is self-schedulable, you may take the final exam during any of the ten final exam slots. You do not need to commit to a specific time slot ahead of time.

If the instructor is offering the option of a self-scheduled exam, inform that instructor during the last week of classes that you intend to self-schedule. Your instructor will notify the Registrar of your intent, and provide the Registrar’s Office with an individually-labeled examination envelope containing your exam.

If the instructor is only offering the exam as a self-scheduled exam, you do not need to sign up: the instructor will simply provide the Registrar’s Office with your examination.

If the exam is optionally self-schedulable, you may still opt to take the regularly-scheduled exam, provided you have not picked up the examination envelope and the test has not already been given. Simply report to your regularly scheduled exam room at the appropriate time. Do not pick up your examination at the distribution site.

However, once you have picked up your examination envelope from the distribution site, you will not be allowed to back out of taking your examination.

On Exam Day

Report to Olin 149 at least 15 minutes prior to the time slot during which you wish to take your self-scheduled exam. As there is limited space available, exam seats will be assigned on a first-come first-serve basis.

Upon arriving, present your picture ID (required) at the exam distribution table to receive your examination envelope.

You will then be directed to your examination room. You may bring no materials with you to your seat, except pencils or pens and your examination envelope. You may also bring a calculator to a calculator-aided exam.

The room supervisor will tell you when you may open your examination envelope to begin testing. No envelope may be opened prior to this announcement.

The room supervisor will tell you when the exam period is over. You must stop writing when so directed and follow the supervisor’s directions for turning in your completed examination. Exams will not be accepted from students under any other conditions. If the room is crowded, you might not be allowed to leave the room prior to the end of the exam period; proctors will inform you of any such restriction at the beginning of the exam.

Academic Honesty

To avoid even the appearance of academic dishonesty, don’t talk about exams at all until after the last exam is over! For example, if someone asks you, “How was the test?” the only appropriate answer is “I can’t talk about the exam, sorry!”

How exams work

Final examinations will typically be given in all courses other than advanced seminars and independent studies, although an instructor may choose other means of evaluation. A professor will only require one traditional in-class final, take-home final, final paper, or other form of evaluation during the final examination period. The final examination schedule, which is divided into 2.5 hour blocks, is determined by the Registrar’s Office.

With the exception of open-book exams, a professor may also give you the option to take your exam self-scheduled. All other work for the course must be due by the last day of classes.

Reading Days are set aside for studying; no final examinations will be given during this time, nor will they be given before the start of the examination schedule.

If you find yourself with exams in each of three consecutive exam periods (and none of them can be self-scheduled), you may have one of them rescheduled. If none of your professors agree to reschedule, you are entitled to reschedule the third exam.

2023-24 Exam Schedules

Exam slots will be used for regularly scheduled AND self-scheduled final examinations. Self-scheduled exams are administered in Olin 149. An additional exam slot is available only for self scheduled exams. See the exam schedule for details. Individual faculty will determine whether or not an examination may have the self-scheduled option.
