Training Introduction

Welcome to the training center for the Google migration. Here you can find a lot of materials curated specifically for the Carleton community!

We have gathered training from both Google and Lynda and have worked to focus on the topics and ideas that will help you get started, get comfortable and gain awesome new skills as you transition to Gmail, Google Calendar and other Google Apps. As these documents are largely created outside of Carleton, some information or slight details may vary. If you find this is the case, you can reach out to the ITS helpdesk (507-222-5999) with questions.

Get Started

Before you migrate:

If you cannot attend a pre-migration presentation session, you should consider watching one or more of these recorded clips:

After you migrate:

The following learning center resource is a great, succinct introduction to the different elements of Gmail and Google Calendar you’ll need to get started.

Carleton Training Sessions

Carleton is providing a series of training events surrounding each migration date. A brief description of each session type is included below, and more details can be found here or by navigating to the Events page. Each type of session is offered multiple times, so find a time that works for you!

  • Pre-Migration Presentation: A 1-hour presentation offered before you migrate, which provides a tour of the Google interface, and a discussion of key Google concepts that are unique to Gmail and Google Calendar, and different from Zimbra
  • Post-Migration Training: Training sessions offered multiple times the day after you migrate, which go in-depth to the basics of Gmail and Google Calendar. If you’re unfamiliar with or have had challenges with Gmail in the past, this is a great session to get your bearings and try out some of the skills in your newly migrated account
  • Drop-in Session: An open-ended block of time where you can stop in quickly to ask one question, or stay longer to try a few exploratory activities to learn how to make Gmail and Calendar work better for you

If you cannot attend any sessions, recordings can be found on the Recorded Training Sessions page.

Google’s Training

Printable “Cheat Sheet” Guides

Google Help Forums

Written step-by-step help resources for each Google App. Here we are linking to Gmail and Calendar, but other resources can be found on the “Other Google Apps” page.

Google Learning Center

A website with a wide variety of training information from basics to advanced tips and tricks. You can find quick-start guides for Google, setting up your smart-phone, tips by app, or by topic such as working as an administrative assistant.

Lynda Training

Carleton subscribes to Lynda (described below) and these courses are a collection of a lot of short videos that introduce you to Lynda. In the next few days and weeks we’ll continue to curate separate playlists to be more applicable to Carleton, but if you’re eager to get started these are great resources.

Lynda provides short videos on a wide variety of topics, and includes a written transcript as well. You can choose to watch the videos and follow along, or find a topic that interests you, read the transcript and *click* on a line that you’d like to see and the video will automatically jump to that section, allowing you to see demonstrations of key topics without spending time reviewing things you already know!
