Google permits individuals to exercise very fine-grained control over their email delivery settings on a per-group basis. This is useful if you wish to limit the amount of email you get from a particularly chatty group, if you wish to receive no email at all but have been automatically added to a group based on data from another information system that you cannot control directly, etc. Below are some basic instructions for adjusting your delivery settings.

1. Log into the Google Groups interface at https://groups.carleton.edu.

2. Click on ‘My groups’ at the top center of the screen.

3. Verify that the heading at the top of the new screen says “My groups in Carleton.edu”. If it does not, look for the carleton.edu link to the right next to the phrase “Switch organization view to:”.

4. A list of groups to which you belong is displayed. For each group, there are two columns of options available; the first controls delivery settings, the second allows you to leave a group. Note that you cannot leave groups that have been populated based on external data sources.

The available delivery options are as follows:

  • Don’t send email updates – you won’t receive copies of any email sent to this group
  • Send daily summaries – once per day, you’ll get a digest of messages sent to this group
  • Combined updates – Google will aggregate messages sent to this group and send them to you in batches of 25
  • Every new message (the default) – receive a copy of each message as it is sent.
