The Quantitative Resource Center can help you with math, statistics, and data in any class or comps project. Our goal is to help you develop your problem-solving abilities so you have the skills and confidence to understand what numbers mean and tackle unfamiliar, challenging work. See the buttons on the left for different ways to connect with us.

QRC tutors can help students in any course or project that uses numbers. We especially work with students in QRE courses (including introductory science and Economics courses) and comps.

What We Help With

We help students become more independent, expert problem-solvers in three ways:

  1. Refreshing and supplementing basic mathematics and statistics
  2. Exploring underlying concepts so you can transfer your skills to new tasks
  3. Troubleshooting the data lifecycle, from entry and storage to analysis and reporting

How We Help

We Work With You, Not For You. We work to build independence, not tutor-dependence. QRC tutors will help you think through your questions and approach them in new ways, so your skills and confidence grow. The QRC is a lot like the Writing Center, but for numbers instead of words!

We Ask Lots of Questions. Before you can solve a problem, you have to understand what you know, what you have already tried, and where you are trying to go. At the beginning of a session, tutors will ask lots of questions to make sure you are on the same page and your time together is productive.

We Try New Things. Solving new problems means taking reasonable risks and making mistakes. QRC tutors often do not know “the answer” already, but they can help you think through your options. As you go down wrong paths together, you will become better calibrated for tackling complex problems where the answer is not immediately evident. They may ask you to draw, diagram, or explain something so you can see it in a new way.

We Model Seeking Help. No one learns in a vacuum. Expert problem-solvers know how and when to use their resources, whether that’s the class textbook, an Internet search, or another office on campus. Asking the right questions, evaluating answers, and synthesizing information are a few skills you will develop along the way.
