Public Works’ Winter Workshop 2019 was “Sustaining Publicly Engaged Projects,” featuring special guest facilitator Liz Bucar, Professor of Religion and Dean’s Leadership Fellow at Northeastern University. Professor Bucar is a religious ethicist and a public scholar whose work has appeared in The Atlantic, The Los Angeles Times, and Teen Vogue. Her recent book is Pious Fashion: How Muslim Women Dress, which explores modesty and dress in three Muslim-majority nations.

She presented on her own public scholarship as well as guiding participants through the challenges, opportunities, and questions surrounding public scholarly work. In addition to Professor Bucar, the workshop featured several other presenters. John M. and Elizabeth W. Musser Professor of Religious Studies Michael McNally shared his experiences working with colleagues, students, and community partners for the project he co-directs on religious diversity in Minnesota. Minnesota Humanities Center Program Officer Jennifer Tonko presented on the work she has done with partners around the state on traveling exhibits. Temporary Director of the Center for Community and Civic Engagement Emily Oliver facilitated a discussion of and reflections on best practices for academic partnerships with communities. To learn more about the resources at Carleton for scholars engaging with the media, Associate Vice President for External Relations and Director of College Communications Joe Hargis and Director of Digital Strategy and Public Affairs Helen Clarke Ebert answered questions about the work they do. Finally, Professor of History and American Studies Serena Zabin led the closing discussion, where participants reflected on the workshop and offered suggestions for concrete next steps to continue the momentum for community-engaged work at Carleton.
