Ten members of the Carleton community attended Imagining America’s National Gathering in Albuquerque. Imagining America is a national consortium of scholars, artists, and designers that promotes public scholarship and engaged work to create a more just society. This year, Carleton was represented by Co-Director of the Public Works Initiative Professor of Art Kelly Connole, Associate Professor of Educational Studies Anita Chikkatur, Instructor in Cinema and Media Studies Cecilia Cornejo, Associate Professor of Cinema and Media Studies Laska Jimsen, Assistant Professor of Music Andrea Mazzariello, Associate Director for Academic Civic Engagement and Temporary Director of the Center for Community and Civic Engagement Emily Oliver, Sergio Demara ‘20 (Cinema and Media Studies), Arya Misra ‘22, Tate Olander ‘20 (Cinema and Media Studies), and Louis Stein ‘20 (Cinema and Media Studies). Professor Jimsen, Professor Mazzariello, Associate Director Oliver, Olander, and Stein presented on their work in academic civic engagement during their session, “Documenting Belonging: Fostering Civic Engagement, Collaboration, and Reciprocity through Participatory Community Media.” Professor Cornejo, with Demara and Misra, presented “The Wandering House – Notions of Home and Belonging from the Heartland,” a discussion of her ongoing project that explores understandings of home through audio reflections of community members. Professor Chikkatur facilitated “Participatory Action Research Workshop for Community and University Researchers,” drawing on her own Participatory Action Research to provide an understanding of the research framework to others interested in doing similar work. In addition, attendees from Carleton attended a variety of sessions and learned about innovative engaged scholarly work being conducted around the country.
