Shaohua Guo, Assistant Professor of Chinese

During summer 2020, Professor Shaohua Guo developed a new course, “Chinese Classic Tales and Modern Adaptation.” In the course, students will explore important Chinese legends and the ways they have been adapted in different media. Critically examining these stories and their variations, students will examine the historical and cultural contexts that influenced their creation and re-creation as well as the function of disparate media in the retelling of these stories. At the end of the class, students will employ digital media to make their own adaptations of one of the stories. Professor Guo also hopes to share the students’ projects with a broader audience once the class is over, to spread knowledge of these classical Chinese stories. Throughout the course, students will be engaging with a variety of media forms and questions of diversity in digital environments, as well as practicing digital storytelling for diverse audiences. Professor Guo spent time during summer 2020 researching the subject, collecting relevant materials, designing the syllabus and writing assignments to prepare for the future course.
