Just as people feel that they can communicate better with those in an ingroup, they may feel that they can communicate worse with someone who is in an out-group, a difference communication bias. Van Der Wege, Lauren Carothers-Liske ’22, Samira Gado ’24, Shaw Qin ’22, Nisha Rao ’22, Charlotte Zinda ’22, Henry Edmonds ’23, Amanda Lilienfeld ’23 tested whether overlapping identities affect perceived common ground and expectations of communication effectiveness.
