Approved Tenure-Track Searches in 2026-27
In April, the Faculty Curricular Planning Committee (FCPC) reviewed requests for approval to hire tenure-track faculty to join Carleton in the 2027-28 academic year. I am pleased to share that the following tenure-track searches have been approved:
- Classics: languages and literature expertise
- Music: The Eugene Bailey Director of the Carleton Orchestra and coordinator of instrumental ensembles
- Neuroscience: electrophysiology expertise
- Theater: voice, speech, and acting expertise
- Psychology: biological psychology expertise
- Psychology: developmental psychology expertise
Thank you to the members of the FCPC for their thoughtful and judicious engagement in this process.

Web Content Accessibility
Many of you will have heard of the federal mandate that, come April 2027, requires that materials offered via Carleton, including password-protected content for individual courses, shared with larger groups of people must be ADA compliant (ADA = Americans with Disabilities Act), in alignment with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1. For faculty, this has significant implications for materials and interactions stored on Moodle sites for your classes.
What does this mean for you? We will use the time between now and next April to provide opportunities and resources for everyone to identify and modify web-based content that you will be using in the future. For many of you, this will mean a significant amount of additional work, so we will be forming a task force that will work over the summer to bring together the resources, develop guidelines and workshops, and suggest strategies to meet these obligations on a steady, but incremental basis. If you are an early planner for your fall classes, you might for instance consider ensuring that your Moodle site itself follows accessibility guidelines. Our colleagues in Academic Technology will be able to help you with that project. That said, you do not have to complete all modifications of course content by the fall term. If you want to focus on courses that you will be teaching in the winter and spring terms of next year, you might wait until the task force can pull together the resources you will need to modify Moodle course site content. Academic Technology and the Provost’s Office will notify you of any new resources or workshops that become available online over the summer.

Honors Convocation: This Friday, 05/29
Honors Convocation draws the Carleton community together in Skinner Chapel to celebrate the awards & academic accomplishments of our students. As is customary, there will be a special schedule of slightly shortened classes to accommodate for Honors Convo. There will be a reception in Great Hall following the ceremony. Each student honoree is encouraged to invite guests (faculty mentors, staff supervisors, close student friends) to join them at the reception.
Honors Convocation will be preceded by the traditional Academic Procession, in which all faculty are expected to participate and academic dress is customarily worn. Administrative staff are welcome to join the procession. The Academic Procession will assemble at 2:45 p.m. in front of Laird Hall. Staff should join the procession at positions appropriate to their length of service. The order of the academic procession is available online.
Please help us promote Honors Convocation to your majors and students in your classes! This is a great opportunity for students to celebrate the achievements of their friends and classmates, and we’re hoping a little nudge from you might help increase student attendance.
You can visit the Honors Convocation website for more information. Please contact Noel Ponder with any questions. See you there!
Time Remains to Share Feedback on Proposed Change to FDA Allocations
At the May faculty meeting, Associate Provost Eric Egge presented a proposal to adjust annual FDA allocations. Several faculty have already shared feedback on the proposal, which is much appreciated. If you have feedback to share but haven’t yet done so, then it would be most helpful to hear from you by the end of this week. Please email Eric directly at eegge@carleton.edu.
Update to Library’s Catalyst Online Catalog This Summer
This summer, the Carleton and St. Olaf libraries will update the Catalyst online catalog to its latest version. The update will feature a redesigned, simplified interface and an improved user experience. The core functionality will remain the same. The update will take place on August 20th. We will send out more information as we get closer to that date. If you have any questions at this stage, please reach out to Jason Hallen, Systems Librarian, at jhallen@carleton.edu.
Reminder for Chairs and Directors: Review ACE Tagged Courses
As a reminder to department chairs and program directors, now is a good time to review the Academic Civic Engagement (ACE)-tagged courses being offered by your department/program next year. For example, will visitors providing sabbatical coverage for an ACE-tagged course be expected to teach it as ACE? If so, early communication about this expectation with the visitor and the CCCE is important, especially if community partners are implicated. Or you may recommend the ACE component be removed for a year while the course is taught by a visitor. ACE tags follow a course and carry over from one year to the next. If an ACE tag needs to be revised (added, removed, or changed), faculty should submit a course revision form.
Advising
Departmental Advising Plans
Thank you to those of you that have already filled out your advising plan. If you have not already done so, please fill out this simple Google Form by 5pm, June 12, 2025. The information provided will allow our office to get a sense of the number of advising slots that departments prefer to allocate to liberal arts advising. Please note, however, that this indicates preference and is not a binding number and we may reach out to departments and individual faculty concerning their advising load.
Spring Exams and Locations
Spring term exams are Saturday, June 6; Sunday, June 7; and Monday, June 8. All examinations will be held in the same rooms where classes have met during the term, unless the Registrar’s Office has assigned you to a different examination room. If your class needs a different space for exams, please call the Registrar’s Office at x4094. When possible, we will assign your class to a larger room.
Grade Submission Deadlines
- The deadline for submitting Spring 2026 grades in Workday is Wednesday, June 10 at 8:30 a.m for seniors and Wednesday, June 17 for all other class levels. Timely submission is necessary for Commencement, grade processing, student access to view grades, and for the Registrar’s Office to prepare for Academic Review. More information about grading is available online.
- Grades can be entered through the My Teaching app or by using the Assign Student Grades for Student Course Section task. A Final Grades step-by-step tutorial is available to assist you.
- Student-Opted S/Cr/NC Grades: You will submit the letter-grade equivalent, and the system will convert the grade to S*, Cr*, or NC*. Courses offered on a mandatory S/Cr/NC basis (“scrunch-only”) will only show S, Cr, or NC as possible grades.
- Low Grades (D+, D, D-, F, Cr, NC, Cr*, NC*) require a form submission in Workday using the Create Student Low Grade Form task (formerly known as the D/F Form). You can submit the form after you have submitted your grades in Workday.
Fall 2026 Manual Waitlist Processing
Manual waitlist processing for Fall 2026 will begin Monday, June 1, 2026, and will continue until the last day of exams before pausing for Summer Break. You can email your waitlist requests to waitlist@carleton.edu. For more information, please see our Waitlists webpage.
Students Should Request Prerequisite Overrides in Workday
Faculty can grant prerequisite overrides directly in Workday. If a student doesn’t meet a course’s minimum requirements, have them submit a Request Course Section Prerequisite Override task. Instructors will get a notification (via the bell icon in the upper right), and the request will appear in My Tasks for approval or denial.
A few reminders:
- Approving a request does not enroll the student—they must register themselves.
- Overrides can be granted even if the course is full; the student will be added to the waitlist (granting approval will not override the capacity for your course).
- If no instructor is assigned, the student should contact the department for permission.
- Denials are not communicated to the student by Workday.
- Students are expected to speak with the instructor before submitting a request.
We have help articles available for students and for faculty.
