Provosts’ Office Hours

Those of us in the Provosts’ Office know that you may have many questions these days, but may not feel like it’s worth scheduling a formal appointment to talk with us. So, we are coming to you. We will be holding office hours across campus over the course of the next five weeks. If you have a question, want to chat with, or just say hello to Michelle and/or the Associate Provosts, please feel free to stop by during any of the following times:

  • Fri. 03/07, 11a – 12p: Anderson Atrium (Michelle)
  • Wed. 03/12, 10:30a – 12p: Sayles Table 3 (Michelle and Eric)
  • Mon. 03/17, 3 – 4:30p: Weitz Commons (Michelle and David)
  • Tues. 04/01, 1 – 2:30p: Anderson Atrium (Michelle and Yansi)

We hope to have conversations with many of you in the coming weeks!

ACM Leadership Fellow for 2025-2027

The Provost’s Office is delighted to share that Rebecca Brückmann, Associate Professor of History, has been appointed an ACM Leadership Fellow for 2025-2027.

The Associated Colleges of the Midwest selected 10 fellows from among its 14 partner colleges who are tenured Humanities faculty with demonstrated leadership capabilities, commitments to diversity and inclusive equity, and the potential for a transformative impact at their institution.

As part of her fellowship responsibilities, Brückmann will lead two discrete projects. One will explore an expansion of interdisciplinary collaboration among Carleton programs that study racialization, ethnicity, and intersectionality; in the second, she will collaborate with Associate Provost Yansi Pérez to improve the College’s retention action plan for historically underrepresented faculty.

We are looking forward to working with Rebecca on important goals of the institution.

ACE Course Development Support

If you plan to teach a new or continuing applied ACE course next year, please consider these two resources to support course development work and reflection with a community partner over the summer. Let ACES Associate Director Emily Seru know if you plan to apply for either grant, and she can offer guidance and support.

CCCE Community Collaboration ACE Grants

April 4 Deadline

  • Up to $4,000 to work with a Community Partner to develop a New ACE Course;
  • Up to $4,000 to compensate an existing community partner’s participation in an existing ACE course;
  • May fund community partner honorariums/contracts to co-create or sustain Applied Academic Civic Engagement (ACE) courses and ACE-designated student research projects with faculty;
  • Faculty may apply for between $2,000 to $4,000 a term.

Funding can be used:

  • to bring community knowledge holders, elders, partners, etc. to campus;
  • to pay for community knowledge holders’ time collaborating on the design and execution of a project/ course content. We recommend paying community partners/co-educators $100/hour;
  • to pay for partners’ transportation to and from campus;
  • to pay a faculty member for time over breaks to plan for and reflect on an ACE course, new or ongoing (up to half of the full grant request amount).

Periclean Grants (2 Carleton faculty per year may apply to support a course in the Humanities)

Reminders from the Registrar’s Office

Winter term is flying by! Here are some friendly reminders about key dates and procedures as we wrap up the term:

Winter 2025 Self-Scheduled Exams

The Self-Scheduled exam process is now managed by Karen Moldenhauer in the Provost’s Office. Self-scheduled exam packets are now available for pickup in Laird 131. If you have questions, please contact Karen Moldenhauer.

  • Self-scheduled exams will be held in Olin 149.
  • If you are using self-scheduled exams, please remind your students that the exams will be administered in Olin 149. Students should arrive at the testing site 15 minutes prior to the start of the exam slot.
  • All self-scheduled exams are due back to Karen by Thursday, March 13, no later than 4:00 PM.
  • You may pick up completed exams in the Olin 149 lobby during the exam times through 10:00 p.m. on Monday, March 17. Remaining tests may be picked up in Laird 131 beginning Tuesday, March 18 at 8:00 a.m.

Grading

  • The deadline for submitting Winter 2025 grades in Workday is Monday, March 24th at 8:30 a.m. Timely submission is necessary for grade processing, student access to view grades, and for the Registrar’s Office to prepare for Academic Review. More information about grading is available online
  • Grades can be entered through the My Teaching app or by using the Assign Student Grades for Student Course Section task. A Final Grades step-by-step tutorial is available to assist you.
  • Student-Opted S/Cr/NC Grades: You will submit the letter-grade equivalent and the system will convert the grade to S*, Cr*, or NC*. Courses offered on a mandatory S/Cr/NC basis (“scrunch-only”) will only show S, Cr, or NC as possible grades.
  • Low Grades (D+, D, D-, F, Cr, NC, CR*, NC*) require a form submission in Workday using the Create Student Low Grade Form task (formerly known as the D/F Form). You can submit the form after you have submitted your grades in Workday.

Spring 2025 Course Waitlists

Manual waitlist processing will start Monday, March 10, 2025. You can email your waitlist requests to waitlist@carleton.edu. For more information, please see our Waitlists webpage.

Housekeeping Tasks for Advisers of Sophomores

After sophomores declare their majors, departments will take some time before they assign major advisers. During this brief period, students do not have an official adviser. You may want to alert your advisees that if they anticipate requiring your signature or approval on a petition (e.g. an OCS form, an exception to policy petition, etc.), they should handle this business before they declare their major. If you and your advisee agree that it may be best for a major adviser to sign such petitions, be mindful of petition deadlines and that the assignment of major advisers takes a few weeks.

Supporting Student Mental Health

With the end of the term fast approaching, students may be under a lot of pressure and may not always know the best way to process what they are experiencing. This website is a Carleton resource hub for faculty, staff, parents, and family members to use in supporting Carleton students. Class deans are another excellent resource you can reach out to if you have any questions about how best to support your advisees.

Thank you for all your work with your advisees!
